WE HAVE ARRIVED

Well, it has happened. velocache.net is now a fully operational battle station. Prepare yourselves.

Before I digress, which I am known to do, let me start off by giving some credit and handing out some thanks. This would not have happened without you all. You know who you are. Thank you. The new site would not be in existance without Buttars, if you run into him, give him a hug and buy him a beer. HUGE thank yous to the veterans out there who have kept this afloat in times of trouble and triumph...I have personal things to say to you that will have to wait until we have a face to face.

At the pokercache party on September 19 I would really like to take a bit of all of your time and preach a little about "the game". We'll see, I will probably just get drunk and cry a lot.

SO. Go to the site. Familiarize yourself. It is different than the one we play on now but can do all of the things we do now AND MUCH MUCH MORE. You will need to create an account. It is free and always will be for players. I realize some of you have already been in and have looked around but it is time for everyone to come on board. Texting from a phone to the site works. E-mailing too. There is a great forum feature that we can all cache ourselves in as well. This site is still in beta. It is not finished so now is the time to see if we can break it.

For now, play around. Posting "real" caches is not off limits but I think it might serve us better to get really comfortable with the new toy before we go "live". Post pictures of your cats and dogs. Go to the forum and talk about bikes. Have fun.

LOVE to you all. -A. Mortician

  6. Someone on the Statesman web posted the Ada County Prosecutor info:

    Roger Bourne
    phone: (208) 287-7700 fax: (208) 287-7709 e-mail: adacountyprosecutor@adaweb.net

I for one am going to contact him and demand that tougher penalties be given for nailing cyclists with cars. I can't think of any other circumstances where someone is injured or killed with such a huge potential weapon and given such lax treatment. The current hand slap treatment is obviously not working.

In the last week, I was almost hit twice, both in the north end (one of the reasons I really dislike the alley caches). In one case an old SUV was parked 'against traffic' and I saw the driver get in the vehicle to leave. But I didn't expect the driver to gun the thing in reverse diagonally across the road. He slammed on his brakes and skidded the tires and I was able to swerve and avoid getting hit but this guy was literally going 15-20 mph in reverse. The other case was a driver fast approaching and then rolling though a stop sign.

Two days ago I had a driver in a new white Yukon pulling a huge green boat honk at me angrily after I made a right turn at a stop sign, from the bike lane into the bike lane, never getting 'into the road'. I am getting sick of the car centric mentality some folks have.

  7. Does anybody know if a ghost bike is going up?

  8. There will be one, one way or another. I'll do it myself if needed.

I just emailed the mayor and the ada county prosecutor demanding action. I hope others can find the time to do the same.

  9. I'm good.
Treker, what did you write? I've been trying to come up with something polite and strongly worded, but just end up with a run on sentence full of expletives. I'm fed up with reading "No charges have been filed at this time".

Yet another cyclist has been hit and killed in Boise - we demand action

    Mr Bourne and Mr Beiter:

As both of you, I am sure, are aware, yet another cyclist has been hit and killed in Boise. How many more people are going to have to injured and/or die before real action is taken? Real action in terms of demanding drivers operate their vehicles attentively and without impairment by drugs and alcohol; providing respect for all users of the roads; and harsh sentencing including for those that commit vehicular manslaughter.

Reading some of the hateful and aggressive forum comments towards cyclists on the Idaho Statesman newspaper articles on the deaths
should be a clear indication there is a problem. A problem with education, a problem with law enforcement, and a problem with
    appropriate sentencing.

Most motorized vehicle drivers seem ignorant of the law regarding bicycles on the roads and develop a resentment and hate for perceived infractions. Granted there are some bicyclists that do not obey all the rules, the same as vehicle drivers, but I am talking about anger for NOT breaking the rules. There is clearly a knowledge gap in perception and reality.

Law enforcement seems to focus on revenue friendly infractions such as speeding and seat belt enforcement rather than demanding safe attentive driving. Cops using cell phones, texting, and laptops while driving hardly present a good example to the average citizen for attentive driving. Examples should be set by those responsible for enforcing the laws. Tolerance for lane weaving, red light running, and driving substantially below the flow of traffic while talking and texting must be addressed.

The laughable sentencing, in cases such as last year when the woman stopped in the bike lane was run over by the Hummer and the boy that was clobbered walking to school in Eagle, indicate a high tolerance for vehicle induced bodily damage and death. Is that the sort of society we want to promote, one even more heavily dependent on cars, trucks, and SUVs, in order to increase our odds of survival while commuting and recreating? The cycling community is waiting to see what happens regarding the 3 recent bicyclists deaths.

Many in the cycling community are fed up with the lax treatment of vehicle induced damage and death to cyclists. We demand that
    something be done about it.

  11. RESPONSE FROM BIETER:

I received your email outlining the bike fatilities that have recently occurred in Boise. I'm a bicycle commuter myself and have witnessed first hand the near-misses and dangerous behavior that put riders at risk but I also see inattentive behavior by bike riders as welll. Each of us must take it upon ourselves to be as conscientious as possible. I want to assure you that I'll be working hard to help make our community safer for cyclists. I also plan to call together local agencies to find ways to educate everyone about what is legal. I'll be talking to Police Chief Mike Masterson about increased traffic enforcement, particularly in those places where cyclists tend to ride and where roads are narrow or potentially dangerous. I'll continue to press ACHD to make those roads less dangerous and to give us more and better bike lanes throughout the county. We need to explore changes to traffic laws (such as the three-feet-to-pass law that Kurt Holzer wrote about in the Statesman last week) to better protect bicyclists as well as better traffic signage. I will do all I can to bring about awareness and encourage responsible driving and riding. The prosecution of the motorists is in the hands of the Ada County Prosecutor.

Thanks, and be careful out there.

    Sincerely,

    David H. Bieter
    Mayor
